Rice-Based Souvenirs from Daxi
2025/09/22
Even though rice consumption in Taiwan has steadily declined in recent years—due to dietary Westernization and more diverse food choices—rice remains one of Taiwan’s most important crops, a nation built on agriculture.
Through our Kueh cooking classes, we not only preserve and promote traditional Taiwanese rice food culture, but we also created the Taiwan Kueh Map, introducing stalls and shops in the market that sell traditional rice foods.
However, since many of these rice delicacies are not easy to preserve, we’ve put together this special guide to rice-based souvenirs—perfect for visitors to take home, or even abroad, and share the beauty of Taiwanese rice culture.
Talking about rice consumption might feel a bit heavy—so let’s just start with the simple joy of supporting delicious Taiwanese rice products!
🥮 Taiwanese Traditional Pastry in Daxi
Some of the rice-based pastries we recommend from Daxi:
Sweet Potato Cake (番薯餅) – Known as “Daxi’s mooncake.” Today, it’s mainly made with wheat flour, but traditionally it still includes roasted glutinous rice flour (鳳片粉) or glutinous rice flour.

Ko-á (糕仔) – Traditional rice-based snacks made with roasted japonica rice flour (糕仔粉).
💡 Did You Know? Rice-Based Dry Pastries & Roasted Flours
Aside from being made directly into soft “kueh,” rice can be roasted and ground into flour, then mixed with sugar, salt, oil, mung bean flour, or plum powder to make dry-style pastries with unique textures.
These pastries are not only used as offerings during rituals, but were also once the rare little treats that elders enjoyed in daily life. Step into Daxi Market or nearby pastry shops and try these festive snacks, each carrying a special roasted rice aroma.

Other Taiwanese pastries you may also find include mung bean cakes and salted egg yolk pastries.
